As a footwear brand Beckett Simonon has the power and responsibility to enact change. Many clothing manufacturers churn out tons of garments every season without much (if any) regard for how excess production leads to an overwhelming amount of waste, mismanagement of resources and worker exploitation.
Most excess inventory ends up in landfills or is incinerated, which produces dangerous greenhouse gases. Additionally, a lot of mass production is done by workers, sometimes children, under inhumane and dangerous conditions all for the sake of cost-cutting.
At Beckett Simonon we strive to create the best products possible out of materials that will last for an extremely long time. This way you will have items which you can wear and treasure over the years, not just seasons. And possibly hand them down to future generations.
Our artisans are afforded the time and safe conditions they need to apply their skill when handcrafting enduring, high-quality goods that stand the test of time. We follow a Made-To-Order (MTO) business model, which means that every item we produce is pre-ordered by a committed owner. This way we can reduce waste, manage resources, avoid overproduction and help you save money. Think of the time you wait as an investment that will pay dividends well into the future.
Ours is the quest for creating something that remains, for enjoying enduring experiences in our lives and thoughtfully designed objects in our wardrobes. It is also the pursuit of celebrating and preserving craft; while taking ownership of the impacts of what we put into the world.Milena P. Workshop Coordinator
Being a leather footwear brand, Beckett Simonon is extremely aware of the impact our business practices have not only on our workers and immediate environment, but the world at large. That is why we take great strains to mitigate any potential damages. No person or company operates in a vacuum, and we must do all that we can to be conscientious global citizens.
We realize that our team members are individuals before anything else, and we must honor their uniqueness. In order to do this Beckett Simonon has created an environment where mutual respect, enjoyment, support, collaboration, openness, growth and humility are fostered; one where everyone can flourish and do their best work.
Products which outlast trends and can be repaired rather than replaced are essential. That’s why our collection is rooted in classic designs with a contemporary flair. The materials we use have been carefully selected for their durability, and your Beckett Simonon products can be easily maintained and repaired if needed.
Our Made-To-Order (MTO) business model ensures every item we make already has an owner and eliminates overproduction. During the production period you will receive email updates to involve you with our practices and introduce you to the artisans.
The artisans who handcraft your goods are the backbone of our company, and it is a privilege to work with them. It's our duty to honor their craft and their dignity by providing safe and enjoyable working conditions, above-average wages and a comprehensive benefits package to each one of them.
Even though it's difficult to find materials with zero environmental impact, we make it a priority to use ethically-produced materials processed with minimal toxins, repurposed from waste, or made with natural fibers. In our efforts to identify the most environmentally sound materials possible, we are constantly researching and testing new options.
Even as a small company, we know that Beckett Simonon has an obligation - and the ability - to make a positive impact. However, we are sometimes limited in our capacity to fully realize our goals. That said, we are constantly evolving and finding new ways to do better, and to become a responsible brand. Please hold us accountable when we fall-short.
We are well-aware that working with leather is a controversial practice. However, we choose to do so because bovine leather is naturally durable, wear-resistant and ages beautifully. It isn’t a disposable material that will end up in a landfill after only a few uses. Furthermore, the leather we use for our dress shoes and boots has been sourced from Gruppo Mastrotto, a Gold-rated tannery in Arzignano, Italy.
This is the highest rating awarded by the Leather Working Group (LWG) in recognition of a producer’s highly responsible, and environmentally sound, processing methods. Mastrotto has also been awarded with certifications in terms of quality (ISO9001:2015), Environmental Management System (ISO14001:2015), biological or renewable components (USDA Certified Biobased Product), and environmental and human health (Blue Angel).
